BATON ROUGE YOUTH COALITION "BRYC LAYERS" HEALTHY COOKING SESSIONS
The BRYC layer girls came together each week to make awesome food creations each week. Here is an example of the pizza pitas we made on our homemade pitas! We learned how to be creative with ingredients for recipes depending on our individual preferences. For our meals, we used produce from the BRYC garden or local farmers markets. Through the sessions, we taught the girls about spices, complimentary proteins, and healthy alternatives for unhealthy foods. We all wound up trying new foods and demonstrating new cooking methods like steaming and roasting.

GREAUXING HEALTHY BR
As an assistant site manager for Slow Food Baton Rouge, I work with others to establish and maintain gardens at schools in Baton Rouge. I am also involved in leading and creating the content for the nutrition and garden lessons for the children in the extended day programs. The kids love planting, watering and harvesting. They are always eager for more tasks and to pluck leaves off the plants to taste them. At the end of this semester, we are planning to create a dinner with ingredients mainly sourced from the garden. Some of the lessons included information on the nutrition facts panel, composting, how to plant potatoes, and processed foods.
GIRLS ON THE RUN
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit girls running program that aims to help girls harness their inner strength, joy and confidence. I volunteered as a head coach and led practices twice a week. I loved getting to know the girls as individuals and to help them accomplish the goal of running the 5K at the end of the season. The lessons all related to common issues in the lives of young girls. We discussed things like how to be assertive, the importance of complimenting others and the importance of setting personal goals. I liked the curriculum because it utilizes physical activity as a platform for open discussion and friendship. Through Girls on the Run, I was allowed to pass on my love of running to the girls.
